WELLINGTON Phoenix will play their final 2007 Pre-Season Cup match in the capital after beating Melbourne Victory 2-1 in Melbourne on Saturday night.
With the scores tied at 1-1, Brazilian midfielder Daniel gave the visitors an unassailable lead with just three minute to go in regular time after displaying some nifty foot skills.
But it was the Melbourne side that gained the ascendancy early through a Karl Dodd own goal on 34 minutes. Archie Thompson fired a cross that rebounded of Dodd and into the back of the net to give the home side a 1-0 advantage and there was no change to the scoreline before the break.
After an arm wrestle in the opening stages of the second half, the Wellington side hit back through Shane Smeltz. Smeltz was the beneficiary of a well-taken Daniel free kick and the New Zealand international made no mistake, firing past Victory stopper Michael Theoklitos.
And the deadlock wasn't broken until the 87th minute when Daniel cut a swathe through two Victory defenders and fired past Theoklitos to seal the win.
Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert lauded his side's committment.
