Fed Res: Olympic 3, Petone 0
A glorious autumn day and a suburb pitch greeted both sides in a game that Olympic needed to win to get the season back on track after a disappointing double headed over Easter weekend. Olympic welcomed Derek Waldergrave from Wanganui, the latest addition to our under19 squad, and began the game in a very focused manner. Solid and well organized defending by Nigel Ingham and the veteran Basil Matrakis along with very good displays on the flanks by Hadlee Southall and Garrick McCarthy ensured that Petone were going to have a difficult path to our goal. After the opening 20 min where Olympic had the advantage it was no surprise for Olympic to take a well deserved 1-0 lead through Tommy Short, who received the ball 10 yards in the Petone half, and run at the defenders beating them with pace to score a marvelous goal. Several more chances fell with Giles Frobisher and Nick Theodorou creating many opportunities for the front runners, and a magnificent through ball saw Tommy Short again beat his defender with sheer pace only to be crudely hacked down when clear, with the defender luckily only being shown a yellow. Half time came with Olympic only leading by the single goal. The second half saw Petone come out the more aggressive and fine defensive work again held them out. From a fine through ball by Nick Theodorou, Tommy Short again beat his defender and set off towards the goal and slot another past the advancing keeper to make the score 2-0 to Olympic. Dimitri Goulas replaced Nick Theodorou who was required for the first team as a sub. In the 75 min Tommy Short again beat his man and slotted his hat trick to completed a 3-0 score line for Olympic. Very difficult to single out any player as the team effort was a complete effort by every player, although an outstanding hat trick by Tommy Short stands out as the high light.
