England 2 - 2 Greece
Just when seven glorious months of Super Sven seemed to have been exposed as nothing more than a flight of fancy, along came David Beckham to ram home the fantastic reality that England are going to the World Cup Finals. With just 106 seconds remaining of the four minutes allowed for stoppages by Dutch referee Dick Jol, and a desperately unwanted play-off with Ukraine beckoning next month, Captain Fantastic plundered his repertoire of unstoppable free-kicks for the seventh and final time and landed the jackpot. The shot curled deliciously around the Greek defensive wall and floated tantalisingly inside the left-hand post with gallant goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis rooted to the spot. It was only after the final whistle had sounded that the England players realised that Germany's failure to beat Finland meant that their own drawn encounter with Greece had been sufficient to earn outright qualification.
